Hello, I work in Ableton Live, and find it to be wonderful - Ableton has nice sounds, and notes can be entered one at a time to the piano scroll. The only problem is, I'm limited to seeing or editing the piano scroll of only one instrument at a time. This makes it difficult to do contrapuntal writing. (For Ableton users, I'm referring here to the "Arrangement View")
My ideal interface would have some sort of 'tabs' at the top of the piano scroll, for displaying the instrument you want to edit to the foreground. The notes of the other instruments could be displayed in the background, for example with transparent boxes - or ideally, each instrument could be color coded.
Does anyone know of other (DAW) software that offers this sort of functionality?

Have you checked out Musecore?

It's not a DAW as such, but does provide a more natural approach to composing, allowing you to see multiple parts laid out as sheet music.

In the Windows MIDI sequencer software Sekaiju, the Piano Roll window can show multiple tracks at once: sekaijupianoroll.png. Over on the right side, you can check or uncheck the tracks you want to see. You have to be careful to leave the track you want to edit as the one highlighted on the right side list. (Or selected in the first drop down box in the toolbar.)
However:
Seakiju is only a MIDI editor, it doesn't have any audio or VSTi capability.
The tracks are shown in different colors, but with the same intensity, it doesn't fade out the "background" tracks you aren't currently editing. Also, if you have multiple tracks playing the same pitch, you can't change which track is shown in front, the higher-numbered tracks always get put in front of the lower-numbered tracks.
