MIDI Music Geek Showcase

MIDI serves as a crossroads where digital musicians, electronic engineers, software programmers, and cross-media artists converge. Perhaps MIDI has long transcended its definition as merely a musical interface; those drawn to and surrounding it often possess a profoundly innovative vision that merges art and technology. In our MIDI universe, musical notes are Bach’s gospel hymns, oscillating signals in circuits, the Rosetta Code of computer language, and indeed, the heartbeat and passion we feel at music festivals. So, let’s gather with friends who love music and creation to explore the works of these MIDI geeks!

The MIDI Music Geek Showcase will include:

Xavier (Muyang) EntropyMusic.cc Musician, Engineer, Educator

As the founder of Entropy Music, a multi-dimensional music collective, his creative endeavors blend music with cross-disciplinary art installations. He designs personalized tuning devices and hosts a series of music workshops and weekly jam sessions, dedicated to inspiring more people to engage in the expression and creation of contemporary music.

Eight Notes (EM Studio’s finalist in the MIDI Innovation Award, latest upgraded version)

Eight Notes

Featured Work: Eight Notes

Eight Notes is an innovative electronic musical instrument. Magnetic beads on movable sliders correspond to variously assigned notes, chords, or arpeggios. When the performer pushes, pulls, or scratches the sliders, sensors trigger MIDI note signals. These connect to a synthesizer to generate sound, synchronized with ambient lighting effects. For this upgraded version showcased here, geek Muyang has also specially handcrafted a full table of candy-feast-like tone controllers.

A person sits at a table with electronic equipment in a room lit by green lights, surrounded by graffiti-covered walls and vertical light tubes. Text overlay reads EIGHTNOTE.
A group of people wearing headphones sit around a large table covered with audio equipment and laptops, engaged in discussion in a modern, well-lit workspace.

Windy Whisper

Featured Work: Windy Whisper

A sound art installation reconstructed from an old oscillating fan, representing the first experimental piece in the “Jam with Things” series. The fan’s movement is familiar, and the motor noise and mechanical vibrations it produces are within our cognition. Sensors are arranged around it, and the triggered MIDI signals are connected to a synthesizer and lights. Electric current propels musical notes, echoing its breath and flickering light… In this moment, you might feel it is a living being, its behavior synchronizing perfectly with something anticipated within your soul.

Materials: Electric fan, voltage regulator, laser sensor, magnetic sensor, LED lights, speakers, etc.
Software: DigiShow, Ableton

Windy Synthesizer

Featured Work: Windy Synthesizer

A sound art installation constructed from a set of air duct pipes. We attempt to build a dynamic sculpture within less than 1 square meter using electronic synthesizers, sound, and light technology. Like a pipe organ placed in a sanctuary, you can use it to play the whispers of the breeze and cicadas, the fury of hurricanes and thunder, listening to the first snow in autumn woods, the melting ice of a spring stream…

Materials: Plastic, wood, electronic circuits, fan, lights, speakers, MIDI pad, etc.
Software: DigiShow, Ableton
