The MIDI Association MIDI Certification Courses And Curriculum

Upon reading the MIDI notes announcement about the Association's agreement to develop a MIDI Curriculum and Certification Program with the SAE Institute of Mexico, I've decided to talk about the Curriculum and Certification that is currently offered through their partnership with Non-Linear Education.

It seems it was a great effort initially when it started but a lack of oversight and effort to continue updating the courses beyond the basic scope disappointed me. I'm not here to complain about the price or that I paid money to access the courses offer. I genuinely expected a deeper knowledge base but was underwhelmed to find there are more courses focused on music production and Ableton than there are MIDI beyond the fundamental elements of how MIDI was created and how it works. I understand that there are not many users (I'm the 17th ranked user after only two months of being a member) but I found less and less info about MIDI and more and more info about using a DAW to mix than guides to explore MIDI for creating art. In one video, the instructor laughed before saying they didn't know how to use the MIDI Scripter in a course specifically about MIDI FX in Logic. There isn't a single video on MIDI 2.0 no courses on using MIDI for lighting, no courses on programming or anything about live performance focused on using MIDI for performing. The most advanced thing I found is a 4 or 5 minute video about the Logic MIDI Environment or the courses on MIDI Orchestration. That's not to say there isn't good information, there's MIDI basics for every major DAW platform available, but there's a lot the same thing over and over that could be found on Youtube. I wish I had more positive things to say besides good effort. I hope the MIDI Association continues educate, trying to inspire new artists with what MIDI has to offer but with more direction and intention as they move forward. I'll continue to use the service provided until I get bored. Overall, the education program of the MIDI Association lacks direction and intention. If anyone involved with this initiative for education wants to hear more from me, I'd love to talk.

Hi Andrew,

We agree with you 100% which is why we have completely changed our educational strategy.

Non-Linear Educating is a very good company, but as you correctly described they focus on selling courses on how to use specific DAW platforms.

We needed to focus on providing information on MIDI itself. That's why we have just announced that we have sign a memorandum of understanding with SAE Mexico.

MIDI Association and SAE Institute Mexico Sign MOU
for development of a MIDI Curriculum and Certification Program

The MIDI Association Executive Board agreed to sign the memorandum of understanding with SAE Mexico toto develop, offer, and operate a series of online educational courses focused on MIDI.

The purpose of the curriculum is toraise awareness about MIDI in education at schools (secondary, college and university, and pro schools), and for manufacturer and reseller staff members.

All materials created for the Courses will be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license. This ensures materials are freely shareable, including for commercial purposes, must retain attribution, are modifiable/remixable by others, and such modifications must also be shared under the same terms.

One of the reasons, we selected SAE Institute Mexico is they have a special relationship with Coursera that allows them to offer viewing of videos at no charge on the Coursera platform.

Here are a few videos about the initiative.

You can read more about the curriculum details in this article

Finally, the MIDI In Music Education is a special interest group so if you can participate directly.  This form let's you sign up and we look forward to your participation.
