As you are likely aware, the WebKit engine used in iOS browsers does not currently support WebMIDI.

This is major problem for web apps designed to work on mobile phones.  Android-based devices don’t have this problem.

I am wondering what the MIDI Association’s position is on this.  Is anyone working with Apple to have this limitation removed?  If not, is that an initiative that you would consider pursuing?  If so, I’d be interested in helping.

Clearly, Apple has MIDI support for native apps, so it shouldn’t be much effort to support WebMIDI. I understand that they have some security concerns with SysEx messages, but those concerns should be easy to mitigate.  The implementation could either ignore SysEx messages or give the user a choice of enabling them with appropriate nanny-state warnings.

Also, I'm wondering if WebMIDI will be updated to support MIDI 2.0 and if the MIDI Association is working with the W3C Web Audio Working Group on that.

Cheers!

The lack of WebMIDI support in WebKit for iOS is a significant issue for web apps. While Android doesn't have this problem, iOS users are limited. Collaboration with Apple could help resolve this, especially since they already support MIDI in native apps. Security concerns like SysEx messages could be managed through user settings. Integrating MIDI 2.0 into WebMIDI would also be a great step, and the MIDI Association could work with the W3C Web Audio Working Group on this.
