Can MIDI devices be switched with relays? I have 3 pro audio devices, I want to program run to run with a MIDI controller. It would be advantages have them all with the same MIDI address but switch from one to another, e.g. with relays. Does anyone make a switch like this? Else, I could build one if the concept works.
Thanks...s

The MIDI Solutions Router must be programmed over MIDI.
The Sipario is described as "Advanced MIDI Router", so it should be able to do what you want.

If you want to build this yourself, relays would work, but you could also use any other kind of switch.

Thank you. Very helpful.

Some wiring questions: (I'm going to build a remote relay box)

I found the MIDI DIN-5 pin out wiring at: http://www.interfacebus.com/PC_MIDI_Pinout.html

Should I wire all the shields together? Should the shields be connected at both ends.

Could 2 (or more) MIDI ports be connected in parallel at the same time?

Can the same command(s) be sent to multiple devices with the same MIDI address, at the same time? E.g. I could use one command to change the volume on multiple devices.

Thanks again
Steve

The cable shield (pin 2) should be connected to ground at the sender, but left open (or AC-grounded through a capacitor, see the Electrical Specification Update) at the receiver.

If you put a switch in the middle, you should connect the shields together. Furthermore, the shield should not be switched (switch only pins 4 and 5).

It is not possible to have two senders or two receivers connected directly together at the electrical level; for that, you'd need a MIDI Merger or a MIDI Thru box.
