I have a BOSS-RC5 loop station with two MIDI connectors in the form of two (stereo) 3 mm jacks, one IN and one OUT. I also have a MIDI foot switch with an USB-C connection.
So how do I convert from one to the other? Is this simply a wiring problem or do I need more? Where can I find specs for this?
There are adapters you can buy for USB-C to 3.5mm. They work well for headphones and microphones from a computer. It MIGHT work the same way for MIDI as they do for audio as long as both ends of your connection are MIDI? But you may have to do a combo of USB-C to MIDI-DIN and MIDI_DIN to 3.5mm, as I assume there will not be a computer in between.
I found this page that explains how the TRS works for MIDI.
https://minimidi.world/
Looks like Type A is the standard, with
MIDI 4 (Source) > TRS RING
MIDI 2 (Shield) > TRS SLEEVE
MIDI 5 (Sink) > TRS TIP
What is the model number of the foot switch? That might help to figure it out.
Normal USB/3.5mm adapters will not work; USB audio and USB MIDI are different protocols. As far as I can see, the RC5 does not support MIDI over USB, so you need to get a TRS/MIDI cable.
The USB connection of the foot switch requires a "host", either a computer, or a "USB MIDI host" device (which is a small embedded computer).
Can USB-C to 3.5mm adapters be used for both audio and MIDI connections, and could a combination of USB-C to MIDI-DIN and MIDI-DIN to 3.5mm adapters work without a computer intermediary? Additionally, which model number foot switch might be compatible with the TRS MIDI configuration outlined on minimidi.world, considering microphone usage?
