Hi All, a little help needed if possible.
I need to connect an Alesis eDrum kit to my system but the cable length is an issue. Machine only has USB MIDI out (type B) and the run is about 7.5/8m. I have yet to find a reliable USB cable or one that is dedicated to MIDI. My audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 8i6) has 5-pin MIDI in and out so my question(s) is:
Can I use a USB MIDI host box, connect the Drum kit to the box and then use a pair of 5-pin DIN MIDI cables to connect to the interface. I have used long runs of 5-pin cables in a live situation so I assume that this would be OK but I'm not sure? Are these boxes designed for that or are they just for connecting to synths etc. that only have 5-Pin connections?
They are reasonably expensive so I wanted to check first. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Do a search for "active usb extender". Circuitry in the cable allows a usb signal to travel much further than a standard USB, so may help you out.
They look interesting, thank you! A lot simpler.
Depending on your price range I would also take a look at CME's WIDI options, might reduce your cable runs all together. I have tried an active extender before with a MIDI control interface and was getting a lot of noise on the line, might have been my configuration but just something to be aware of. CME also has the MIDI splitter with built in bluetooth capability and USB connectivity. Link to the site: https://www.cme-pro.com/product/widi-thru6-bt/. Im currently using the non blue tooth version and haven't had any issues with it, my runs are not very long though. Hope this information helps
