In May 2024, The MIDI Association (TMA) undertook significant activities in Berlin that included a groundbreaking industry meeting and participation in Super Booth 2024.
First DAW Working Group Meeting (Berlin 2024)
The TMA hosted a three-day DAW Working Group summit at the Native Instruments office in Berlin (May 2024). This was the first meeting of the group and brought together top companies to address MIDI 2.0 implementation in DAWs and plugins . During this session, the attendees discussed solutions for supporting multiple plugin formats and easing MIDI 2.0 adoption.
A key outcome of the meeting was an agreement to develop open-source “MIDI-CI helper” softwareunder a permissive MIT license – essentially a toolkit to translate MIDI 2.0 messages (e.g. Profile data like Orchestral Articulation, MPE, Piano) into each plugin’s native format . This closed-door working session was a pivotal event where the major announcements above were formulated and agreed upon.
This collaboration aims to help plugin developers support MIDI 2.0 features without needing deep MIDI 2.0 or MIDI-CI expertise .
TMA also revealed work on a DAW Control Profile, a new MIDI 2.0 standard under development. This forthcoming profile is intended to replace proprietary DAW control protocols (like Mackie Control and Logic Control) with a true open industry standard for controlling DAWs via external hardware/software . The announcement signaled an important step toward standardizing how controllers communicate with all DAWs, improving interoperability for performers and producers.
Meeting at the Berlin Offices of Ableton in May 2025
The DAW WG has been meeting online every week for the past year. This year before Super Booth 2025, we will be holding a MIDI Association members only meeting at the Berlin offices of Ableton. We often say The MIDI Association has two super powers.
First, we can bring Apple, Google and Microsoft together and agree to implement MIDI 2.0 in their operating systems.
Over 30 developers from Ableton, Apple, Avid, Bitwig, Focusrite, JUCE, Microsoft, Native Instruments, Roland and Yamaha will gather for an intense working and coding session on May 6 and 7.

This year The MIDI Association will have it’s own booth at O234. It is in the hallway close to Ableton, Moog, Sequential and Oberheim so please come visit us.
Andrew Mee, Technical Standards Board Chair, Athan Billias, Executive Board Member and Mike Kent, Executive Board Member and Chair of the MIDI 2 Working Group will be there to answer questions. There will be demonstrations of the latest Windows driver, working prototypes of the UDP Network Transport and new member Waldorf’s Iridium synth that supports MIDI 2.0.
