I have a Korg Krome keyboard. I have downloaded free MIDI files online that I have loaded to an SD card and imported into my Krome. I want to mute some of the instruments so that it can play along with my band in live venue situations. My problem is that I can't get the sounds that are in the tracks to change for good. I can get it to change and it will play that way but when I press the stop and rewind to the beginning of the song it automatically reverts to the original sound that was assigned to the track. I've tried making the changes and then before I do anything save it on my Krome as a .SNG and I can but when I go to load it back in it still reverts to the original sound and every time I can change the sound but when I hit play from the beginning it automatically reverts. Is there a way to make the change permanent on the keyboard or do I need some sort of software to make these changes?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I don't know your Korg Krome, but the cause is probably that the tracks you want to change have "Program Change" events embedded at the beginning of the tracks. An easy solution would be to import the MIDI files into a software sequencer in your computer, remove the PC events by hand (or even delete the tracks you don't want to listen) and then export the resulting song again for your keyboard.

Regards,
Pedro

One possibility may be that the PC (Program Change) command is NOT at the very beginning of the track, or there may be more than one PC command in the track. So, when you try to change the instrument, your system places a PC command at the start of the track, but playing the file will apply this, but then reset the original instrument. You need some sort of 'sequencer' software that will highlight ALL PC commands, so that you can change (or remove) them all.

I have a program called Anvil Studio that I use to delete the tracks that I don't want. Is that a program that I can remove the pc command in?

Anvil Studio may be more complex that you need, but yes, it should be able to do what you need.

AS will try to use a build in virtual synth to play back, but it should be able to send midi data to your keyboard instead.

There are a number of 'views' available, you should check them all to find out which one allows you best access to the PC (Program Change) items that are causing the problem.

The Staff view may not show them. The Piano Roll view may not do so by default, but you may need to select an option to show PC items. There is also a 'Midi Events' view that will show all the midi events.

One extra problem that was not mentioned before. There are two ways of selecting sounds/instruments/patches, depending on the keyboard/device. The PC (Program Change) command is the usual method, but this allows one byte only, which is fine for switching between - for example - the 128 GM patches available. More modern devices may well have a lot more sounds, divided between various 'Banks'. So you need more data to select these sounds, and this can vary between devices. There may well be a 'Bank Select' command needing two bytes (MSB and LSB - aka Most Significant Byte and Least Sig Byte) and this may then be followed by a PC command, or I think that for some devices the two bytes can select Bank and then sound within the bank. Once a specific Part/Channel has been set to a specific Bank, then subsequent PC commands may well change to other patches within the same bank, which might well NOT be what you want.

Check up in your manual for the keyboard regarding Bank Select and Program Change.
