The latest XG I could find was from 1998: http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/pdf/xgspec.pdf

Is there no newer specification?

And I also could not find specs for GS anywhere, not even an old one.

So if any of you know how to find the latest ones I would very much like to have them.

Thank you, but those links seem to be to old content. The SC8850 is 22 years old for example.
Is the only way to get GS specs to look in synth manuals. Isn't there a PDF with just MIDI GS stuff, like all the sysex, all the rules, all the patches and banks.

The SC-8850 seems to be the most complete GS document available that I have found. I use the Cakewalk Instrument File for the 8850 for all of my GS bank and instrument names.

For XG, I use a combo of sw1000xg and 9000ProV100.

SYSEX can be found in those manuals, but may vary from device to device, even from the same manufacturer.

As you mentioned, these are all old devices, but there does not appear to be any modifications to the specs since then, at least none I have found.

To my knowledge, the SC-8850 was the last GS device produced. GS has not changed since.
Unfortunately, as you have discovered, the GS specification was never published by Roland.
