Hi everyone, 😊

I am setting up a small home studio and could use some advice. I am relatively new to MIDI and want to make sure I am doing everything right. I have got a MIDI keyboard, an audio interface and a DAW (Ableton Live). I am struggling to get everything connected properly. Sometimes the MIDI keyboard does not respond or there is a delay when I play notes. What could be causing this. Also any tips on optimizing my MIDI setup for smooth performance would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to your advice....

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards

[Maria]

Which MIDI interface are you using? There are various cheap MIDI USB interfaces that are poorly designed and cause issues like the ones you are describing. Roland makes a reputable model.

To optimize your MIDI setup and resolve the issues you're experiencing, start by checking that all connections are secure, ensuring your MIDI keyboard and DAW are set to the same MIDI channel, and updating the drivers for your keyboard and audio interface. If you're encountering latency, adjust the buffer size in Ableton Live, make sure your audio interface is set as the primary sound device, and consider using a USB 3.0 port while closing any unnecessary background programs to free up CPU resources. Additionally, using a powered USB hub can help with power supply issues, and checking for firmware updates for your devices may improve performance. Finally, review your DAW's MIDI settings and use latency compensation to correct timing issues. These steps should enhance your MIDI setup and provide smoother performance
