I'm using midi files for backing tracks and my set maker for lyrics on the iPad. My set maker has MIDI send and receive functionality. Does anyone know if I can add a control message to my Midi Files to tell My Set Maker to select the lyric which matches the Midi File?
John,
If you have the means to edit a midi file, then, yes, you could add some sort of instruction that would be sent out. How this might be implemented would depend on various things, which your question does not help with.
Similarly, a message sent might be recognised at the other end (?), by 'set maker' (?) or by the iPad (?) depending on just what the setup is. I assume you have some sort of midi control over the receiving system, otherwise you would not be asking in the first place.
For example, you might use a normal controller on a specific channel not otherwise used by the midi playing, then the device playing the music (?) would be set to disregard that channel, but the device with the lyrics would be set to receive - although I don't know how, on receiving a trigger (and that's all it might be) it could activate the selection of specific lyrics.
Anyway, a LOT more information would be helpful.

Are you using the app called "Set List Maker"?
The website section "To control Set List Maker with a MIDI device" explains how you can associate an incoming MIDI message (Note, Program Change, Controller, Start/Stop, or Song Select)* to trigger an "Action". However, I can't find a list of the available "Actions", so I'm not sure if there's one that will select the lyrics the way you want.
For example, the video "Using On Stage" starting at 5:34 demonstrates using a remote to change pages and explains you can do similar things with MIDI messages. But I don't know if there's an "Action" to load a specific lyrics file.
Here's the forum section for Set List Maker on the developer's forums, which may be another place to ask.
*As Geoff suggested, if you want to add extra messages in a MIDI file for these triggers, it's probably easiest to try using Program Change or Controller messages on a channel that's unused in your MIDI file. Note messages will probably make an unwanted sound. Start/Stop and Song Select are normally messages to control a MIDI file player, and may be difficult to embed in a MIDI file so it sends while its playing.
