Hi all,

Call me stupid, but i‘m not able to find an answer to my question:

Is there a way to change the Midi Channel for a Midi Track in a Sequenzer like Cubase with an ordinairy Midi Controller?“

In Detail:
I have bought an old Kore 2 Midi Controller and i want him to control my Kontakt 5. in Kontakt i have two Banks with different Instruments loaded into it. with Program Change i can switch with the MCU Wheel through the Instruments in the Bank 1. But how can i go to Bank 2 with a Controller Button? Bank 2 uses Midi Channel 2.

Is there a way to change Midi Channel in Cubase Elemnts 9.5 with Kore 2???

Thank you very much!

Interesting question.

Never thought about that.

Please note that as far as midi is concerned, the channel assignment is part of the midi event, regardless of the track.

Most people, as a matter of clarity/convenience, using any sort of sequencer, would keep all the events in a track to a specific channel. Assuming you're using midi file type 1. If using the older type 0 (zero) then you have no option as there is one track only and all events, regardless of channel, are in that track.

I'd guess that as far as midi is concerned, you could have events for multiple channels in one track in a type 1 file as well. However, some sequencer systems may complain (and may or may not allow it).

So, to do what you ask about, you'll need to change the channel assignment for a specific event (say a Control Change).

There is no midi command to do this. It's possible that certain sequencers may have a way to do this, but I'd guess NOT via midi.

What data is the controller sending? If the controller can send XX XX XX XX bytes set as channel 0 (for channel 1) to do what you say it DOES do, then it could also send the same bytes, altered for the different channel assignment, as an alternative. Then the question of 'track' is irrelevant?

Does this shed any light on the problem?

If it's not possible to do what you want directly, I'm sure there must be a 'work-around' of some sort.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response!
I can set the Channel for a Button in my Midi Controller Software. But what Sense does it make when all the incoming Signals from my Controller are going to one selectet Miditrack with one Channel?

I dont understand that. For example my Controller sends a Program Change in Channel 2. my Cubase sees the Signal as Program Change with Channel 2. have i loaded one Instrumenttrack with Midi Channel 1 with Kontakt in it, all goes to this channel (1).

When i Load two Instrument Banks in Kontakt. One will be on Channel 1 and the Other on channel 2. But i can with my Controller only control the Bank on channel 1. what am i missing here?

Thanks alot.

Hello again,

Reading through your comments, I'm wondering...

Midi channels are a specific thing, I understand the point to this. The main point is to separate multiple instruments/functions, so that you can play actual music, i.e. have piano on channel 1, flute on 2, bass on 3, etc.

If your setup has all sounds from one bank as channel 1, and all sounds from another bank on channel 2, then this rather misses the main point. So I'm wondering, do you mean the same thing when referring to 'channels' for Kontakt (this is a soft synth system ??) as you do when referring to midi channels?

Having ALL the sounds available in one bank ONLY one at a time seems somewhat odd? If this is so, then you can play a piece with 2 instruments ONLY, i.e. one on channel 1, the other on channel 2. Maybe with such a setup you could have two - say - pianos on one channel, and say two of another instrument?

OR, do you have to be doing Program Change commands ALL the time, to swap between instruments using the same channel?

I have a different soft synth set up on my PC. At present, it has one SoundFont file set up, although that file contains a number of Banks. I'm not sure how that might swap between Banks, I'll try to check that out. This might touch on the same problem you're having?
