I'm trying to work out the neatest / most efficient way to set my MIDI gear up and was looking to see what people here thought might be the best approach.

I control everything from a Mac going to a MOTU Ultralite soundcard which has 1 x MIDI IN and OUT

I have four MIDI devices I want to control but also program the voices on from time to time using various editors on the Mac.

Is the most straight forward way to send the MIDI OUT from the MOTU to the first device and then use the devices Thru connections to chain them together so I can use one device without having them all on at the same time? If that's the case, how do I combine the four MIDI OUT's from the synths to one input on the MOTU so I can program the synths? Does that require some sort of Merge box or MIDI patchbay?

Do any of your MIDI devices have USB? Most MIDI products made in the last 10 years have USB MIDI. You could get a very inexpensive USB hub and connect your USB MIDI devices to the hub. USB connections are bi-directional so one cable has both in and out.

No, afraid all my MIDI synths are fairly old and only have MIDI din connections on them.

MOTU makes a 5x5 MIDI interface (Micro Lite) which seems like it would do what you need. That will allow you to have all 4 MIDI In and Out ports accessible to software on your Mac.
