Hi all

So I am a complete newbie to MIDI and spent the last week doing some research and hitting dead ends. So my 'use case':

I play in multiple function bands playing keys. I have a Roland Juno DS 88 and a Roland VR-09b. The Roland Juno DS has built in patches (sounds) as well as the ability to create custom set ups of multiple sounds layered/split and various other things - these are called 'User Performances'. The Roland VR-09b also has pre-set sounds, the pre-set sounds are categorised inside different 'engines' if you like (Organ, Piano, Synth). This also with the ability to create custom set ups - these are called 'registrations', where you can mix sounds from different engines either as layers or splits.

So I currently have about 100 songs, most of which have custom 'performances' on the Juno and custom 'registrations' on the VR09b. A real pain when each of my bands change their set orders, have different set lengths for different gigs etc.

The solution, you will be ahead of me here! I have an app called 'On Song 2023' on my iPad which is essentially a set list manager. I can list all my songs, assign PDF (chords charts) and have midi messages assigned to each PDF for when the PDF is opened - AMAZING.

For the Juno DS, I simply check the MIDI Implementation Guide, find the MSB & LSB number for the 'User Performance'. I enter this into the 'Meta Data - MIDI Send' section of the song in the app and bosh - the correct sound loads on my Juno DS when I open the PDF inside the app. OK, some other minor details to get this working but that's essentially it.

Then there's the infamous VR09. So what can I do? I can load pre-set factory sounds which I thought I could work with. However, I can only load them from the synth and piano engines - not the organ engine (also confirmed in some other forums). There are organ sounds with the piano engine, but with no ability to use rotary/draw bars etc. - defeating the point of me buying this keyboard, so this is no use to me.

So I started digging into SysEx, not fun. I have found some great tutorials and have been using these to try and trigger a 'Bank' sound (one of my custom sounds), but no matter what I try, I cannot get it to work. For those that might be able to help, I have found these should be the right settings:

1. Set MIDI to Mode 2 on the VR09

2. Use MIDI channel 4 to receive

My latest attempt was: F0 41 10 62 12 B4 00 01 FF F7

I'm am now desperate as if I can't fix it, I will need to buy a Fantom 06 at £1,200 which I would really rather avoid. What I really need is somone who is a whizz that can provide the exact VR09 settings required, and the exact SysEx code to trigger a 'Registration' change for my saved registrations - or to simply confirm this will never be possible.

Here is the Midi Implementation guide: removed link
