Hi, community from MIDI Association,

I found this link for a kind of software or program that apparently allows me read, write and play MIDI messages. I got to read some MIDI messages by my cell phone.

Its name is JZZ.midi.smf.

https://github.com/jazz-soft/JZZ-midi-SMF

I would like to know If I could use It to read MIDI messages within my DAW.

I found also Jazz-plugin and JZZ.JS around that piece of software.

I would like to know If this program allows me read, write and play MIDI messages within my DAW.

Dearly,

Emanuel

PS: I would really love to learn about this matter. 🙂

This will depend on the DAW that you have. You don't say.

Most DAW systems should allow you to load in a midi file (SMF - Standard Midi File) and display the information in various formats. An 'Events List' display may be most useful to see the midi data. This will allow you to 'read' the data, and often it will also allow you to edit the data ('write' the data) which usually includes the ability to add new data into the events list. You should then be able to 'play' the loaded (and edited) file, and save it as a replacement or additional file.

Your DAW should be able to do this now, without any plugins etc. There are however various specialist programs that will provide the same functions without all the overheads of a full DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), and a number of these may be free to download. You may find one of these easier to use?

Hi, Geoff, thank you for answer,

I did this discussion because, as I explained at the two other topics of this forum I did, I can't perceive a MIDI message working in my DAW:

https://www.midi.org/midi/forum/11194-quest%C3%A3o-sobre-channel-master-coarse-tuning

https://www.midi.org/midi/forum/11398-question-about-compatibility-to-midi-messages

My DAW is Pro Tools 10.3.9 HD and I use a controller USB keyboard Behringer UMX610. I use an audio interface Behringer UMC404HD.

I wrote two MIDI messages to test: Channel Fine Tuning and Channel Coarse Tuning.

The Channel Fine Tuning MIDI message works, probably, but I can't perceive working Channel Coarse Tuning.

I don't know If I am expecting the effect wrong from the MIDI message, because I don't know It, but I don't know why apparently Channel Coarse Tuning doesn't work.

The Channel Fine Tuning apparently works well: I saw the difference between the values of Tuning from 0 until 127 on Data Entry MSB and LSB. I perceived the change in the Fine Tuning for the different values.

But for Channel Coarse Tuning, I did not see any effect working.

I don't know If I didn't perceive difference between the values from Channel Coarse Tuning for I don't know its effect and result which It is, but I was putting different values of Data Entry MSB and I didn't see It work.

I wrote the MIDI message, I guess, correctly in MIDI Event List in Pro Tools:

CC 101: 0
CC 100: 2
CC 6: any value, but It does not work.

And the other MIDI message, the Channel Fine Tuning, works well in the MIDI Event List.

Sema sent me two test MIDI files, but I don't know why, they did not work too: Channel Coarse Tuning and Master Coarse Tuning, in my DAW Pro Tools.

I think my DAW Pro Tools doesn't read and write and play Coarse Tuning.

I tested by Cell phone those MIDI messages he sent me and Channel Coarse Tuning was read, but Master Coarse Tuning (SysEx) did not do.

Then, I used JZZ-MIDI-SMF by Cell phone and finally my Cell phone read the SysEx message Master Coarse Tuning.

Therefore, I thought If I install JZZ-MIDI-SMF to my computer, my DAW could read MIDI messages as like SysEx Master Coarse Tuning and Channel Coarse Tuning.

And then, what do you think?

As I did on Cell phone, using JZZ-MIDI-SMF, the Cell phone read MIDI messages like SysEx Master Coarse Tuning, Will my DAW Pro Tools read too SysEx Master Coarse Tuning and Channel Coarse Tuning which before did not read?

Will It be needful I install JZZ-MIDI-SMF or some other software MIDI library like this from this link bellow so that my DAW Pro Tools can read some MIDI messages It does not read until now?

https://jazz-soft.net/download/

Will my DAW Pro Tools read SysEx Master Coarse Tuning or even Channel Coarse Tuning If I install JZZ-MIDI-SMF or some other piece of software around?

Dearly,
Emanuel

Channel coarse Tuning

CC 101, value 0.
CC 100, value 2.
CC 6, any value and I get no result after that.

I think my DAW Pro Tools does not read Channel Coarse Tuning and SysEx Master Coarse Tuning.

Hello,

As was mentioned in the other thread, the midi messages can be sent to a midi device, but that device needs to know about, and understand, the message, and be able to respond to it.

I'm not sure that Pro Tools is a midi device. It may be just a DAW. However, it might have some sort of plugin, and this device may be the device that turns the midi instructions into actual sounds. A VST maybe, using Sound Fonts or similar. May Pro Tools can use various different sorts of VST, and each of them may have different abilities. Each device may have a MIC (Midi Implementation Chart) which defines which midi messages the device can receive and respond to.

What device (hardware or software) is Pro Tools using to actually create the sounds? This is the device that matters here.

Does this device respond to the Channel Course Tuning? You say it DOES respond to the Fine Tuning, but it may NOT respond to Course Tuning as well. This is quite possible.

If you don't know, please say what the device is and I can look it up, maybe find the MIC, or other details.

But as (I think) Sema said before, not all devices respond to all messages, it will depend on the capabilities of the hardware/firmware/software.

Pro Tools is a DAW.
Within It, I am using some sort of instrument software like the samplers Xpand 2 and Steve Slate Drums 5.5 and Syntronik.

My DAW, Pro Tools 10.3.9 HD, seems responding to Channel Fine Tuning, but not to Channel Coarse Tuning or SysEx Master Coarse Tuning.

The device in question must be my DAW Pro Tools 10.3.9 HD, in case, It is a software device, which apparently does not respond to Coarse Tuning.

Right.

So, for the purposes of this discussion, the midi device that needs to receive and respond to the SysEx command will be one of those three.

Maybe Syntronik?

What information do you have on their midi implementations?

Yes, Syntronic is a virtual synth, incl emulation of a number of classic synths. As I read it.

So, this is your destination midi device. This device needs to be able to respond to the tuning commands.

A quick look on the web gives no info about the midi facilities, other than suggesting that they are limited, and need to be set up in some way (as in 'learned' by the device).

There is a forum specific to this system, provided by IK Multimedia. Search for Syntronik Forum. Maybe you should ask there.

But it seems likely that the midi capabilities of the unit are limited, and maybe restrictive, and may not go beyond fine tuning in this area.

Thank you, Geoff.

I will try to see If using Syntronik in my track inthe DAW, in MIDI Event List header, If I get Coarse Tuning to work.

I did not read the MIDI implementation Chart yet of these instrument software. I will try to use Syntronik in the track for the MIDI Event List at first.

Hi, Geoff,

I decided for now to leave this matter off and to move on because I don't believe that my current setup of hardware and software Will respond to certain MIDI messages.

But I thank you for help me!

Emanuel
