Where can I find a currently functional Staff View editing tool set in a MIDI sequencer that does live capture? I'm a songwriter/composer who often can play what I want but can't always tell you what it looks like exactly. I have been playing into sequencers then cleaning them up in Staff and Piano Views.
I used to able to rely on Cakewalk versions for this. Now none of the Cakewalk Staff and Piano Views currently support the full set of tools: [Scrub], [Select], [Insert], [Delete].
Lately whenever I go do my normal amount of editing or writing in Staff Views they have become very buggy.
The [Scrub] tool no longer bothers to show anymore since Windows 10.
I was looking at Master Tracks Pro for Windows but the size of the measures on the screen is awkward.
Perhaps there is a Grid sizing tool? I'm expecting to be able to easily insert, drag, resize and property modify notes as needed.

Where do I go next?

I can understand your frustration. I was a Cakewalk user too, a long time ago, and I've also struggled among the Staff and Piano Roll views.

The closest thing I've found is Rosegarden . It is free as in Freedom, but you will pay a price: switch from Windows to Linux. There is a Windows port, but it is mostly non-functional.

Pedro

Thank you for your quick response.
I will bear that in mind.
Will a Linux VM work for Rosegarden?
Will it under Ubuntu?

Rosegarden will work in a virtual machine, with Ubuntu or any other Linux distribution. The problem may be your MIDI interfaces. Even if they work, you may experience longer latency using a VM.

Thank you for the new idea. I may explore after a bit. I just replaced my not too terribly older MIDI interfaces last year with a pair Yamaha USB 3.0 interfaces just to get a current driver for Windows 10. I was trying to get Sonar to work but like I was saying earlier They have forgotten the hybrid songwriter like me.

The closest I've been able get to almost normal is do live MIDI in Sonar then export into MuseScore for editing. It is not the same at all. Is there any thing out there a bit closer to normal? MuseScore is nice but it doesn't do live MIDI capture and [scrub] preview only does 1 staff / track at a time.

Hello,

I might have a solution if I understand your needs properly. You are looking to be able to immediately detect and automatically recognize/record incoming midi data with out the need to pre-configure the individual continuous control?

I am not sure if you are looking for something along the lines of no latency? I also have a solution for this on Windows 10 if that is what you mean by live capture.

All the Best,
