The recent soundtracks I have been working on have produced "quiet" MIDI files, with peak volume values that are mid-80s at most.
I added in global volume modification to my editor, and am curious what best practices are regarding volume. Should I keep it below a certain value so there is headroom when playing many sounds at the same time?
My files all use a combo of channel volume and expression to control the perceived playback volume. I just ran a series of tests on one particular file, and got the following results after converting to mp3 and running ReplayGain analysis:
Max Volume (CC 7), Track ReplayGain (dB), Track Peak
89, +5.99, 0.482
100, +3.68, 0.618
105, +2.72, 0.685
110, +1.82, 0.757
115, +0.97, 0.834
120, +0.15, 0.915
125, -0.63, 0.989
Based on this single song, a volume max of 115/120 looks like a good number to shoot for. Is there any reason this might not be ideal?
I went with 120 for this soundtrack, and had 1 spot of clipping in my final recording, so I have to reduce the volume in all my files. I realize the recording is affected by all of my record settings as well, but normally when I am done (using my current settings) I have to normalize the recorded album audio as a whole. This time it is a smidge too loud.
It just so happened to be the track I tested the different values above, so 0.915 is too loud during the recording process and caused the clipping.
