I'd be most interested to see the midi file you've got from the process you used.

As I understand how these things work, the simpler systems can generate some/most of the notes, and create a midi file, but the result tends to be all piano, and it's not multi-track. The resultant file needs a LOT of work to turn it into something useful, but it IS possible.

I've seen info on at least one much more sophisticated process - cannot remember the name right now but I might be able to trace it, which uses a multi-pass process, as the system gradually learns more about the piece of music, and how you want it, and at each stage you can refine the conversion parameters to create data for separate instruments, etc. Even this system though will require some manual 'finishing'! Also, this system is not free.

There are two systems that at least try to do a more sophisticated job of this. You might look at these, and let me know what you think.

The system I remembered seeing details of before is called WidiSoft. There is a free (but limited) trial version available. The notes/info on line might give some clues as to what's involved.

While looking for this, I also note that there's a system called IntelliSoft, which may be doing a lot of the same stuff.

I noted also that the software Audacity has some facilities to import a WAV, do some manipulation of the wave forms, incl slow the sound down a lot, and then export as .MIDi. Again, this is but the first step in the conversion process.

I don't believe it is the track you are looking for, and it is solo piano, but the performer has a site where she can make pdf sheet music and/or MIDI files for a fee, and if she's done this one, there's a chance she's done others from the movie?

Thanks Geoff and Jason! Lots of info. I am attaching the first 30 seconds of the MIDI, as this is all "Intelliscore" demo will allow. This conversion app 'sounds' better, but I have to tinker with the settings some more. I also tried the "Bear Mp3 to MIDI Online Tool" and attached that result. This is the first method I tried. I did purchase a MIDI of "Field of Dreams, The Drive." Unfortunately, the performer told me that she only does solo piano tracks and not orchestrations. I got some work to do! 😀

I've had a listen to the IntelliScore rendering as a midi file, and it certainly sounds like 'something'. Yes, it's all piano, and no doubt there SHOULD be different channels with different instruments there. The piano-roll display still looks a little odd, but not as odd as the previous example, and no long sustained notes, and no masses of Expression controls.

Prob would help to find a .wav (or MP3) version of the same piece and then use my ear to try to separate things out, bit by bit (even instrument-by-instrument).

A significant hint of something being viable!!

Well, I have the "Drive Home" in MIDI format. Was able to add some instruments with my brother's help. Although, it doesn't sound as good when using standard Windows MIDI.

I've had a listen to the two midi files, but not yet looked at the .xml file to see what you've got in there.

I assume that the smaller file is the original piano version, and the larger file is the version you've added other instruments to.

I don't remember what this piece sounds like in the FoD movie, I'll have to see if I can find my copy and watch it again. Can't even remember if it was a VHS or a DVD, if the former then it's been in the loft war a few years and some are now better than others. However, the piece you've worked on is sounding pretty goot, like it might actuallt be valid file music, although I felt there were a few moment where the accomp sounds were a little too heavy compared to the main theme.. Just needs some more tinkering with?

Had this started as a midi, or was it a WAV then suto converted to midi (using Intelliscore again ?).

It started as a MIDI.
My brother has been helping me (through online chatting and emailing of files) to do the main theme. He mentioned something about importing his mp3 into his Cakewalk(?) and singling out the main notes into piano. We want to add instruments. We are trying not to make the accompanying sounds too heavy this time.
I recently purchased a MIDI USB cable to connect to my Yamaha keyboard, so I'm hoping it will sound better - right now using WIndows it sounds kinda like 8-bit Nintendo music (tinny) lol.
