Scale Navigator Dashboard

Dashboard is a map of harmony you can compose and perform with.

MIDI moves notes. But there is no shared way for software to say “we’re in this scale, on this chord, right now.” Every plugin has to be configured separately. Dashboard turns harmony into something the whole session can share.

At its center is a network of connected scales. Inside each scale is a network of selected chords. You don’t pick from a menu. You move through a space, hearing each step while nearby possibilities remain in view. Find something you want to keep, and it goes into the Sketchpad: a place to chain what you found into a progression you can replay and arrange.

One decision controls everything downstream. Change the harmony in Dashboard and Tonalign re-pitches your live MIDI, Ensemble Jammer’s networked instruments retune, and any pitch-aware plugin listening to the session follows—in real time, without touching another window.

The scale network is based on Dmitri Tymoczko’s geometry of voice leading, first presented at NIME 2019. Dashboard is the interface built on top of it.

Instead of selecting scales from a list, musicians move through a connected landscape where neighboring scales differ by just one note. Every step is a smooth musical transition instead of a jump. The interface invites exploration: wander until you hear something you like, then capture that harmonic state in the Sketchpad before continuing on.

Those discoveries become building blocks. Arrange them into progressions, replay them instantly, or automate them on the DAW timeline so harmonic movement becomes part of the composition itself. At any moment you can leave a composed progression, explore somewhere new, capture another idea, and return.

The same harmonic state also becomes something the rest of the session can follow. Dashboard broadcasts the current scale and chord to harmony-aware plugins and networked instruments, so one harmonic decision propagates through the entire musical system instead of being recreated tool by tool.
