Hi everyone,

I am working on a new music project and need some guidance on MIDI specifications. I am a bit new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Specifically I am trying to understand the difference between MIDI 1.0 and MIDI 2.0. What are the main improvements or changes in MIDI 2.0. Also are there specific tools or software I should use to take full advantage of these new features.

If anyone could provide some insights or point me towards useful resources that would be fantastic.

I also searched on this site <a href=" removed link " target="_blank" rel="noopener"> removed link <a href=" removed link " target="_blank" rel="noopener">sap-sac but I could not found anything helpful.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best,
[Nancy]

MIDI 2.0 improves on MIDI 1.0 with:

  1. Higher Resolution: 32-bit precision.
  2. Enhanced Expressiveness: Better control over dynamics.
  3. Backward Compatibility: Works with older hardware.
  4. Profiles and Property Exchange: Easier device setup.
  5. Improved Timing: Better synchronization.

Use MIDI 2.0-compatible DAWs and devices. Check MIDI.org for details.

Hi Abu Islam,

Thanks for the clear breakdown of the key improvements in MIDI 2.0! Your points on higher resolution and expressiveness are particularly helpful, especially for someone like me who's new to this. I’ll definitely check out the MIDI 2.0-compatible DAWs and devices, as you suggested.

Just to add, from what I’ve researched, MIDI 2.0’s enhanced expressiveness seems like a game-changer for more nuanced performances, especially with MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) becoming more integrated. The backward compatibility is also reassuring for those who already have a setup built around MIDI 1.0.

Do you have any recommendations for specific DAWs or hardware that fully support MIDI 2.0's features? It would be great to hear more from someone who’s already exploring it.
