Hello,

Unfortunately I don't see a category on the forum for questions regarding MIDI 1.0 so I'm writing here.

My question: is there a way to fine tune notes separately with MIDI 1.0? Please don't suggest pitch bend "solution" since it affects all notes on a channel and thus reduces polyphony.

I know there is MIDI Tuning Standard but it seems a few synths support it.

Maybe you know the most widely used approach to have microtones with MIDI 1.0?

Thank you!

You probably should check out this article.

Well, looks like there is no one most widely used approach and for complete microtonal support we (MIDI developers) should implement several different ways 🙁

Hello,

You're right that pitch bend affects all notes on a channel, which limits polyphony. Unfortunately, MIDI 1.0 has limited support for per-note microtuning without affecting all notes on a channel. The most widely used approach for microtonality in MIDI 1.0 involves using the MIDI Tuning Standard (MTS), but as you mentioned, it's not universally supported by all synths.

Another workaround is to assign each note to its own MIDI channel and then apply individual pitch bends or fine-tuning to those channels. This requires multitimbral support, though, and can be complex to manage.

If you're working with a modern setup, consider checking if your synth supports MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression), which offers more granular control of individual notes.

Hope this helps!
