I just purchased a Sound Canvas 8850 and I'm having problems getting it to play midi data. I am using a PC Anvil Studio sequencer sending midi data via legacy midi cables to the midi input on the Roland. I've tested the output on another midi keyboard and it works fine there. When I plug it into the Roland I get no activity on the Roland. I've poured over the manual with no luck. Anyone have any ideas what I'm missing. The Roland plays its demo files with no problem.

You did not mention it; did you set the "Computer" switch on the back to "MIDI"? (See p. 16 of the manual; also see all remarks on p. 20.)
Did you do a factory reset?
If this does not work, check if sending data over USB works.

Also, check which channels the Roland is set to receive, and what channels you data is using. The Roland may be set up for the 'wrong' channel(s) for you.
