Dear Anyone.

I've got a little bunch of VSTs with lovely sounds, but I'm using them on Quick Score Elite Level 2, which uses CC numbers for all automation.  And the VSTs don't accept CC7 for volume control (or if they do you have to have it on about 3 to hear any change in the volume!) This includes Kontakt - if you've set up a multi in Kontakt you can't turn the whole thing up and down with CC7, it applies it to the instruments individually which kills the combined sound.

So I need SOMETHING with MIDI-Learn/CC control I can use as an insert effect so by turning that up and down with a MIDI CC number, I can turn the channel's volume up and down.  That's it.  That's all it has to do.  I don't care about what else it does as long as it does that. Or if it's called GAIN or VOLUME, the two are interchangeable here! And the only thing I can find is Blue Cat - which has a huge couple of bugs in.  The first one is it keeps losing its settings.  It reverts to Channel 64 all the time, dunno why.  And the second one, even worse, is it only works on Channel 1 anyway.  Which means if you're using something multitimbral, like Kontakt, you're screwed!

Please, does ANYONE know ANYTHING with MIDI-LEARN or a CC number control (it doesn't have to be 7 I guess, as long as whatever number it uses turns the channel up and down and it doesn't mind being used on any of the 16 outs - be nice, I'm not that techy, I get 'outs' and 'channels' confused, I mean any of the 16 slots you can put instrument sounds on!) to control the volume of the VST.

You'd think there'd be a TON of things out there to do anything that basic.  I can only find Blue Cat and - sorry - that one sucks!

Yours hopefully (I hope that shouldn't be 'hopeLESSly'!)

Chris.

Here's the short answer to your VST volume control problem:

There are limited options for a simple MIDI learnable volume control VST, but Blue Cat isn't your only choice. Here's what you can try:

  1. Alternative VSTs: Explore free VSTs like "JS: Utility / Volume" or "MeldaProduction MLimiterFree" which might offer MIDI learn for volume control.

  2. Workaround: Use a standard volume control plugin after your VST in the chain. This won't be MIDI learnable, but will still control the overall volume.

Remember, "channels" and "outs" are often interchangeable in this context. 16 channels/outs usually refer to the 16 MIDI channels available.

Good luck, and don't give up!

A quick web search shows that "JS: Utility / Volume" does support MIDI learn, but MLimiterFree probably does not.
