Is there any research examining the reliability of MIDI over USB vs 5-PIN DIN? Online searches and even ChatGPT have not produced any useful results. It's hard to believe that this hasn't been studied.

This is not just my opinion in a vacuum, it's based on my experience working for big rock acts and dozens of Broadway shows over the past 20 years. A real power cable and 5-pin MIDI are empirically more reliable and stable. And when they fail, they fail gracefully and are easy to troubleshoot. When USB fails, it does not fail gracefully and is difficult to troubleshoot, especially in the middle of a show." (David Weiser, December 19, 2025)
