Able to record midi tracks. Unable to hear playback.
Windows 7 Professional 64bit, Cakewalk Sonar 8.5 Producer 64bit, MOTU Ultra Lite MK3, Alesis DM10 Studio Kit.
Goal: To assign each percussive instrument to an individual track in Sonar.
I am hooked in via USB. Assigned channels 1-10 to associated percussion instruments. Set-up 10 midi tracks in Sonar. Success in recording each drum to their perspective midi tracks. Problem is playback is a no go. 2 Possible outputs: Ultralite or DM10 USB. Seeing as how the UL is fire wired in to the computer it seems like DM10 USB would be best choice. Tried both, no luck. Not sure which internal clock to use. Tried different settings with no success. Seems like I'm missing something really simple. Let me know if you have any ideas. Really can drive one to the loony bin.
I'm not really clear just what you're doing, but one thing springs to mind.
Are you mixing up 'tracks' and 'channels'?
Many midi devices, such as the bits that actually make the noises, may expect all drum/percussion/kit material to use channel 10. It may be POSSIBLE for other channels to be used, but this might require various defaults to be messed with.
There is nothing wrong with putting each drum (or percussion instrument) on a separate TRACK, but then to assign each of those tracks to Channel 10. I have midi files that do just that.
TRACKS are like on a multi-track tape recorder. They send out the midi data. Channels are to do with the playing of midi data, and how the data is processed during playback.
You MIGHT have a situation where midi data is arriving at the playback device assigned to channels not set to anything. Usually, other channels (except 10) would at least default to something, so the data would normally make some sort of sound (even if not the intended drum) but I don't know regarding the devices you mention.
If you're using midi as a multi-track recording system, are you saving your data as a SMF (standard midi file). If you are, you might attach a midi file (as a .zip file) and a nmber of the people here would look at the data and may immed spot a problem.
Other than something like that, it may relate to the way devices are connected, or set up, and these are things almost totally under YOUR control, and you don't tell us enough about such things to offer any opinion.

What MIDI devices have you selected for input and output in your Sonar project?

I am certainly not getting tracks and channels mixed up. In the DM10 drum module you can assign each drum/instrument a channel of 1-16 but not omni. You can select omni through utilities/midi output which I believe covers the whole module. This is what I did as well as assigning drums to ch 1-10. In Cakewalk Sonar I assigned each drum to the corresponding ch 1-10 in their perspective midi tracks. In Sonar for input and output I have 2 choices. DM10 USB or Ultralite mk3. In input I can select 1-16 or omni. In output you can only select one of the two but no channels or omni. The main outs of the DM10 run into the 3/4 inputs of the Ultralits mk3. The main out of the Ultralite mk3 run into a Rolls headphone amp. Something is right because I was able to record the proper midi information to the perspective tracks. In playback it won't play any sounds because there are no sounds to play or assigned in Sonar. What it should do is look back to the DM10 Module to grab the perspective drum sounds to play. Perhaps putting all drums on ch-10 in both the DM10 and Sonar will work. Seems that if Sonar can record the information it should be able to play it back from the same location. Also not sure about sending and receiving options in the DM10 or if those should just be shut off.
Just to clarify one thing.
The fact that you've been able to 'record' data may not have any connection with any ability to play that data. Rather, you might 'play' the data, but no sound may result. It all depends on what channel the data is assigned to, and, when it plays, where it plays, and does the playing device have a sound active on that specific channel.
