MIDI Device ID's question

Hi all.

On my Roland TD-30KV Drums I can easily change the Device ID without having to go to any special menu but I also have Roland AIRA & on my TB-3 for example I can't seem to find how to change the Device ID to send/receive independent SysEx messages. Would this Device ID change automatically if another TB-3 with the same Device ID was connected in my MIDI chain ? Or can I change Device ID's using SysEx messages ?

Thanks,
Ash.

Changing conflicting device IDs with SysEx messages would not be possible; what should the device ID of that message be?

Anyway, most devices do no allow changing their device ID. If the manual does not tell you about it, it is not possible.

Nowadays, it is common not to chain MIDI devices but to have several parallel outputs.

Hi Clemens thanks for your reply.

Ok thanks I understand. Can you please tell me more about Device ID's ?? In my V-Drums options where I can change Device ID from, it says "The setting described here is necessary only when you wish to transmit separate data to two or more TD-30 units at the same time".

Is this only when 2 TD-30's are connected to each other & 1 to my PC (which I send SysEx from) & NOT parallel outputs/2 separate connections to my PC ??

Ash.

When you have two separate connections from the PC to the devices, and send a message to one of them, the other one will not see it.

Thanks Clemens.

I know you said it's not common to chain MIDI devices these days but let's say I had 2 Roland TB-3's connected to each other but I only wanted to send a SysEx msg to only 1 & they both have the same Device ID's ? What happens there?

Cheers,
Ash.

Both devices will receive it and think it's for them.

You will need to disconnect or power down one of them before sending the SysEx message that sets the device ID. That way, only one of them will receive the message. Once you power on the second one you can address them individually because they now have different device IDs.

Cheers
Eddie
