Midi CC relative step and resolution.

I want to assign a knob (on Maschine) to change tempo in Ableton and Reason. However, I can't figure out how to set the increment to go up or down by 1. How do I set this up in the NI Controller Editor?

My options are to change the step and resolution values but turning the knob causes the tempo to increase or decrease by 8 or 9 not 1.

How does the step and resolution values affect the increment or decrement settings? Why cant we set the increment/decrement value of the knob instead of using step and resolution values?

I'd appreciate any insight. ?

Is this a difficult question? or am I the only one with it? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly, I suspect that this question is really to do with Ableton and Reason, and NOT specifically with MIDI. You might be better asking in a forum relevant to those applications.

Secondly, there's been another question raised recently regarding to changing tempo, and it was suggested there that it would be necessary to create TWO controllers, one to raise tempo, and the other to lower tempo.

Note part of the answer there, a change of 1 will be not noticeable, you will need a much larger number to be detected. However, the resolution of the controller is clearly nothing to do with MIDI.

I did read the earlier post and will look up some of their references. He seems to want to create a program for real time tempo changes. I just want to use a controller which can be assigned to the software tempo function by midi learn. Assigning it is no problem. It does change tempo up AND down but I can’t get the increment of the change to be 1, 5, or 10.

Vernon, (in Ableton) if you use Max4Live, you there are several devices that can help with that, otherwise, ClyphX might help you do this with buttons.

Geoff, would you know if it's possible to send raw packets to modify CC message by assigning buttons to increment ++ or decrement -- the current CC value? I am trying to make an instant mapping script in ableton so I can control each selected device's macros.. except I need to change with buttons, not knobs or sliders! Thanks!

Hello,

The problem is that midi doesn't know what the current value is. So you cannot send ++ or -- within midi, you can only send a new absolute value. There MAY however be specific instruments/devices that can receive an incremental change and act on it, but I couldn't guarantee that. And this would be a midi command unique to the specific device.

Otherwise, the device you are using to generate the change would need to remember the current value, so that when you press the button, it can increase or reduce the value and then generate the new midi command with the new value for the controller, and send that. There are devices that will generate CC messages, they may well work like this.

Could be related

I’m trying to get finer grain resolution on some of my Softube Modular VST gear from Ableton

I believe 14-bit CC is supported but I like to post some pathing to Ableton and Softube (and VCV and Cherry Audio) to maybe work together on RPN/NRPN MIDI messaging

First problem is, I want to be sure there isn’t already a working solution, second is where to point them. This forum might be a good place
