Very exciting news. I have been wondering how backward compatibility works with MIDI 2. For example, I have a much loved Roland 700NX (fantastic action, no aftertouch) could I use this for individual note pitch bend given the right MIDI 2 software?

The 700NX itself will not send MIDI 2 messages. It is possible to write software to convert the 700NX' messages into MIDI 2 messages, but then you have to decide how to map the values coming from the single pitch bend lever to individual notes.
