Elevator Pitch

Traktorino

An open-source DIY MIDI controller kit for DJs, offering expandable hardware, customizable firmware, LED feedback, and seamless integration with Traktor and any MIDI-compatible software.

Product Description

Traktorino 2.0 is an open-source DIY MIDI controller kit designed primarily for DJs. Instead of selling a fully assembled controller, Traktorino empowers musicians to build their own instrument while significantly reducing manufacturing and assembly costs. Because the hardware designs, firmware, and enclosure files are openly available, users can source components locally, 3D print the enclosure themselves, or customize and improve the project to fit their own needs. This open approach not only makes professional-quality MIDI controllers more affordable, but also allows the community to continuously expand and improve the platform. Traktorino works seamlessly with Traktor and any MIDI-compatible software, providing a versatile, customizable, and accessible performance solution.

How It’s Innovative

Traktorino rethinks how MIDI controllers are designed, manufactured, and shared. Rather than offering a closed commercial product, it provides a fully open-source hardware platform that anyone can build, study, modify, and improve. By distributing the controller as a DIY kit, manufacturing and assembly costs are significantly reduced while giving users the freedom to source parts locally or fabricate components such as the enclosure themselves. Factory-assembled SMT electronics improve reliability and simplify assembly while preserving the project’s DIY philosophy. The result is a professional-quality controller that evolves through community contributions instead of remaining a fixed product.

Most Inspiring Use Cases

Traktorino inspires people to go beyond simply using music technology—it encourages them to become creators. Musicians can build a controller that perfectly matches their performance style, while aspiring DJs gain a deeper understanding of how MIDI controllers work by assembling and customizing their own instrument. By combining music, electronics, and open-source design, Traktorino empowers people not only to perform, but also to learn, experiment, and develop their own creative identity.

Expansion Plans

Traktorino was designed with expansion in mind. Its PCB includes dedicated expansion connectors that allow new hardware modules to be added in the future. These modules may be developed by Nerd Musician or by the community, thanks to the project’s fully open-source architecture. Future expansions could include additional mixer channels, jog wheels, performance pads, displays, or entirely new control surfaces, allowing users to build a controller that evolves with their needs rather than replacing it with a new product.

Commercialization

After a successful crowdfunding campaign in November 2025, Traktorino is in the final stages of delivering units to its backers. Following fulfillment, the project will move into worldwide commercial sales while continuing to expand its open-source community and educational resources.
