MIDISplitter 1.5

MIDISplitter 1.5 is a macOS MIDI utility for opening MIDI files, auditioning tracks, changing instruments and mixer settings, and exporting split or merged results. This evaluation build extends the original MIDI 1.0 workflow into MIDI 2.0-aware file handling, including MIDI Clip .midi2 / SMF2 import and export, UMP packet parsing and writing, conservative native-packet preservation when safe, valid fallback conversion when edits make preservation unsafe, and transparent reporting of what was preserved, converted, skipped, or blocked.

The goal is practical readiness: giving musicians and reviewers a usable file workflow today while being honest about which MIDI 2.0 capabilities are supported, limited, or intentionally out of scope.

MIDISplitter 1.5 is innovative because it treats MIDI 2.0 readiness as a practical workflow and proof problem, not a marketing label. Many musicians still work in familiar MIDI 1.0 file workflows, while MIDI 2.0 files and real-world .midi2 examples remain scarce. MIDISplitter bridges that gap by letting users open, inspect, audition, split, merge, and export within a straightforward macOS interface while adding MIDI Clip .midi2 / SMF2 import and export.

Its most important innovation is trust. The app parses and writes UMP packet structures, preserves native MIDI 2.0 Channel Voice packets only when packet ownership and timing remain safe, and falls back to valid MIDI 1.0-resolution UMP when edits make native preservation unsafe. Instead of pretending that every .midi2 export is fully preserved MIDI 2.0 expression, MIDISplitter reports what was preserved, converted, skipped, or blocked. That makes MIDI 2.0 compatibility observable, testable, and understandable to real users.

The most inspiring use is helping musicians and independent developers step into MIDI 2.0 without needing rare hardware, specialized tools, or deep protocol knowledge. A user can begin with a normal MIDI file, see the musical tracks clearly, audition them, change instruments, split parts, merge them back together, and then explore a generated multitrack .midi2 workflow in the same app.

For the MIDI community, MIDISplitter 1.5 is also a learning tool. It demonstrates how a real music application can move toward MIDI 2.0 honestly: supporting what is proven, documenting what is limited, and giving reviewers demo files and evidence reports so the claim can be tested. That combination of utility and education is what makes the project inspiring to me.
