Sonògraf

The “Sonògraf” is an electronic audiovisual instrument. It allows drawings to be transformed into music, turning gestural strokes and geometric figures into electronic sounds.

How It’s Innovative

The Sonògraf is based on computer vision algorithms which analyze images and transform them into notes that feed an internal additive synthesizer or which are sent through MIDI to any external MIDI instrument. Its compositional approach, based on manually drawn “graphic scores” or object collage, turn it into an original, educational and intuitive instrument.

Most Inspiring Use Cases

The Sonògraf is an educational tool for children of all ages which enables the composition of music through manual drawing and collage. It allows the creation of expressive music through intuition, without any technical or theoretical knowledge.

Expansion Plans

The Sonògraf is open to contributions of the open-source community. At the same time, we are developing new functionalities (multichannel MIDI generation through color discrimination, pattern recognition) which might allow more expressive, sophisticated and intuitive performances.

Commercialization

The Sonògraf is an open-source project licensed under creative commons, so we encourage anyone to build their own Sonògraf following the instructions we provide on our github account.
Nevertheless, we dream of a funded revision of the instrument which could be serialized and commercialized for educational and artistic uses.
