Punch, Feed, Play

Elevator Pitch

Punch, Feed, Play

Turn any MIDI instrument into a paper-strip music box.

Product Description

Remember the magic of a hand-cranked music box? That simple, satisfying motion, turning a handle and hearing a melody come alive. Now imagine that crank can play any MIDI instrument.

We are about to reinvent the classic paper strip music box. Blending tactile, hands-on music-making with electronic music.

At its heart, it’s simple: you punch holes in paper to compose your own melodies, feed the strip into the box, and crank. Note by note. Idea by idea. There’s no undo button; just experimentation, happy accidents, and discovery. You’re carving music into existence. A melody you can hold, tweak, rewind, and reinvent.

How It’s Innovative

This project is both innovative and traditional in the way it blends digital music with the old traditions of mechanical instruments (music boxes, barrel organs, piano rolls, etc.). Programming and sequencing MIDI by physically punching holes in a paper strip. The music is, at the same time, permanently hard-coded into a tangible medium and subject to the player’s interpretation as they turn the crank.

Most Inspiring Use Cases

Children, parents, friends collaborating on paper strips, taking turns punching holes and cranking melodies. It becomes a hands-on game where mistakes are part of the fun. We see our digital music box as a way to make electronic music more tangible, more accessible, more fun.

Expansion Plans

Our first version of this device uses paper strips with 15 lanes, an option is to have a second version with 30 lanes.
We are also considering a motorized version.

Commercialization

Our current plan is to launch a crowdfunding campaign for this project by the end of 2026.
