Midilo – Flow-based, MIDI-first looping

Midilo is the world’s first looper with MPE support: capture expressive performances, transform them into new loops in real time, and perform evolving arrangements live.

Product Description

Midilo turns captured MIDI phrases into new performance material without stopping playback. Designed for iPhone and iPad, it connects to conventional keyboards, pad controllers, hardware synths, other MIDI apps, and MPE instruments. With MPE enabled, channel-per-note pitch bend, pressure, and timbre remain intact as a performance is looped and transformed.

Musicians can overdub, edit timing and velocity, transpose chromatically or within a scale, and record live transformations into new loop slots. MIDI Slice Pads make 4, 8, 16, 32, or onset-detected regions playable on demand. The graph can connect collected ideas later or define the order in which empty slots are recorded during a performance, while tempo harmonization synchronizes loops captured at different speeds. Layers and auxiliary playheads create variations, canons, reverse movement, and polymetric structures. Midilo also includes Audio Freeze, MIDI Clock synchronization, Bluetooth MIDI, MIDI Learn, expressive visualization, and Standard MIDI File import and export.


How It’s Innovative

Midilo changes the role of a loop from a finished repetition into source material for the next musical decision. Its graph works in two directions. Used retrospectively, it forms a nonlinear musical scratchpad: ideas can be captured as independent loops without deciding their final order, then connected later. Used prospectively, the graph becomes a scaffold for live performance. A musician can predefine a route through empty slots, and the graph guides the order in which loops are recorded and played. This allows the structure of a performance to be planned while its musical content remains open to improvisation. Tempo harmonization brings loops recorded at different speeds into sync at a shared performance tempo.

Transformations are performable rather than offline edits: a musician can manipulate a running loop, capture the result into another slot, and use that new loop as the source for the next variation. This creates a branching, non-destructive improvisation process in which composition and arrangement happen onstage.

Midilo also turns its circular loop display into a tactile performance surface. Intuitive gesture control lets the player scrub forward or backward through the loop, audition the notes crossed by the playhead, and throw it with adjustable inertia. Pressing and holding creates a MIDI Tape Stop, with configurable pitch bend following the loop as it slows and returns to speed.

MPE extends that model to expressive MIDI. A channel-per-note performance requires pitch bend, pressure, timbre, and note ownership to remain correctly associated throughout recording, overdubbing, slicing, transposition, and playback. Midilo maintains those relationships while still supporting ordinary MIDI equipment. The result is not simply a sequencer with recording enabled; it is an instrument for performing with the evolution of a musical idea.

Most Inspiring Use Cases

A solo performer can sketch the structure of a set before walking onstage by connecting empty slots in the graph. During the performance, each slot is filled in the planned order from an MPE controller or other MIDI instruments, while the musical content remains improvised. Captured phrases can be sliced, transposed, layered, and recorded into new loops, with tempo harmonization keeping ideas recorded at different speeds aligned. The graph carries these loops through the prepared structure while per-note bends, pressure, and timbre remain alive. The performer gains the security of a composed framework without sacrificing spontaneity.

Expansion Plans

Near-term development will add deeper MPE editing and visual feedback, more performance templates and controller mappings, richer project sharing and MIDI import/export workflows, and additional Slice Pad and graph-performance modes. A desktop plug-in version is planned so Midilo’s MPE-capable looping and flow-based arrangement system can live inside DAWs. Longer term, MIDI 2.0 and MIDI-CI will be evaluated for device discovery, profiles, property exchange, and higher-resolution expression while retaining compatibility with MIDI 1.0 and today’s MPE instruments.

Commercialization

Midilo is an independently developed, early-stage iOS app already available on the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad as a free download with a seven-day trial and Premium in-app unlock. The near-term plan is to keep refining the paid product, improve onboarding, publish focused MPE performance demonstrations, and grow a community of MPE controller players, hardware synth users, mobile producers, live performers, and educators.
