Product Description
MIDI Command Studio is a Windows application designed to give existing MIDI hardware a much wider purpose beyond traditional music software.
It turns MIDI controllers into programmable Windows control surfaces, allowing buttons, pads, knobs, encoders and faders to control keyboard shortcuts, macros, mouse actions, applications, system audio and individual application audio sessions.
Mappings can change depending on the application being used, allowing the same controller to become a dedicated physical interface for different Windows software. Compatible hardware can also provide feedback through LEDs, displays and motorised faders.
MIDI Command Studio is designed to work with a wide range of standard MIDI controllers, from compact pad and fader controllers to more advanced control surfaces. The aim is to let users repurpose hardware they may already own and explore practical uses for MIDI far beyond the DAW.
How It’s Innovative
MIDI Command Studio is innovative in the way it takes familiar MIDI hardware beyond its traditional role in music production and turns it into an adaptable physical control system for Windows.
Rather than simply translating MIDI messages into keyboard shortcuts, it allows a controller to interact intelligently with different applications. Mappings can be application-specific, and the Force Focus feature can automatically bring a target application into focus before executing an action, allowing physical controls to operate software even when the user is currently working elsewhere.
Presets can also be switched directly from the MIDI controller itself. This means a single set of buttons, knobs and faders can instantly take on completely different functions without the user needing to interact with MIDI Command Studio on screen.
MIDI controls can trigger shortcuts, multi-step macros, mouse actions, programs and files, as well as control Windows system volume and individual application audio sessions. Compatible devices can also receive LED, display and motorised-fader feedback.
Together, these features allow existing MIDI hardware to become a flexible Windows control surface, extending MIDI beyond the DAW and giving controllers users may already own entirely new purposes.
Most Inspiring Use Cases
One of the most inspiring uses of MIDI Command Studio is turning a MIDI controller that may otherwise sit unused outside music production into a personalised physical interface for an entire Windows workspace.
A single controller can adapt to different applications through switchable presets, putting frequently used shortcuts, macros and audio controls directly under the user’s hands. A fader could control an application’s volume, an encoder could navigate or scroll, and buttons could trigger complex macros or control another application using Force Focus — all from the same hardware.
For example, a controller normally used with a DAW could become a physical control surface for video editing, streaming, communication software, web browsing or everyday productivity, then switch straight back to music duties when needed.
What I find most exciting is that there is no single intended workflow. MIDI Command Studio provides the building blocks, and users can create completely different control systems around their own hardware, software and way of working. It gives existing MIDI controllers a new life far beyond their original purpose.
Expansion Plans
I plan to continue expanding MIDI Command Studio through both my own ideas and feedback from users. Planned features include native HTTP requests, a visual mixer view, MCU bridging, in-app virtual MIDI port creation and support for additional languages.
I also plan to introduce code signing to make installation smoother and continue improving controller compatibility.
Commercialization
MIDI Command Studio is already available, and I want the free version to remain genuinely useful rather than just being a demo. Users can build real setups and use them without a time limit.
Licence sales remove the usage limits and help support me in continuing to develop and improve the app.
