Ensemble Jammer
Product Description
I first tested Ensemble Jammer at a dinner with eleven friends, most of whom had never performed music before. Within minutes we were improvising a piano concerto together.
Ensemble Jammer is a suite of touch instruments—harps, leads, sequencers, drones, and more—that all follow one shared harmony. A leader steers that harmony from Scale Navigator Dashboard, and every instrument retunes instantly as the scale or chord changes. Nobody needs to know the key. No note can be wrong. What’s left is listening, responding, and making music together.
But the phone isn’t just making sound—it is also a MIDI controller. Every gesture is available as standard MIDI, so the same touch instruments can perform GarageBand, AUM, desktop DAWs, or hardware synthesizers while remaining locked to the shared harmony. One harmonic decision can drive both the people in the room and the instruments they’re playing.
How It’s Innovative
Most digital instruments become easier by removing expressive possibilities. Ensemble Jammer removes the fear instead.
Every instrument shares one evolving harmonic state. As the harmony changes, every phone retunes instantly, so anyone can improvise without worrying about playing a wrong note. Beginners, children, and experienced musicians all meet on the same musical ground. Attention shifts away from “Am I playing the right thing?” and toward listening, timing, and expression.
That success exposed a new problem. Watching early performances back, everyone was making music together with their eyes locked on their phones. I’d solved “no wrong notes” and accidentally created “no eye contact.”
The next version moved expression into the body. Tilting the phone shapes pitch, turning through the compass changes register, and the screen becomes something you glance at instead of stare into. Register becomes something you pirouette through rather than something you tap.
Then a backpacking trip exposed another assumption: internet access. The synchronization layer was rebuilt over Bluetooth Low Energy, allowing an ensemble to form anywhere—a classroom, a stage, or around a campfire—with no infrastructure at all.
Most Inspiring Use Cases
A room full of strangers walking into an Apple Store, picking up the display phones and tablets, scanning a QR code, and within a minute turning the entire retail floor into an immersive, interactive musical installation.

Expansion Plans
Near term: additional instruments, Android native MIDI output, recording and playback of performances, richer motion-based controllers, and tighter integration with DAWs and hardware synthesizers.
Long term: expand from small ensembles to classrooms, workshops, concerts, public installations, and large-scale participatory performances. Any collection of connected phones, tablets, or MIDI instruments can become a single harmony-aware orchestra, allowing complete strangers to gather, improvise, and create music together within minutes.
Commercialization
Ensemble Jammer is free, and intended to remain free. Anyone should be able to join an ensemble from a device they already own.
The commercial product is the Dashboard Plugin, which lets musicians compose, automate, and broadcast the shared harmonic state that Ensemble Jammer performs. Ensemble Jammer is the front door to the ecosystem; Dashboard is where harmonic ideas are authored.
