Elevator Pitch

Autotune for Drummers

Product Description

Autotune for Drummers

The inspiration for this project came from many years of playing electronic music with a live drummer. When drummers play electronic music they try their best to keep perfect timing but as the humans they are, they might be a slightly early or a slightly late.
Enters “Autotune for Drummers” – a drum stick capable of correcting drummers as they play and “quantizing” their live drum hits to the beat. This 3D printed drum stick conceals two sensors that allow it to do the impossible and correct the drummer even if they’re late by sending a MIDI note that snaps to the nearest 16th note, even playing a note at the correct timing before the drummer actually hits the drum pad. This is possible thanks to the ability of the drum stick to predict the intention of the drummer by combining the data detected and interpreted by the sensors with the MIDI clock messages coming from the DAW. Focusing on the nearest 16th note allows the drummer freedom and flexibility while still keeping them perfectly synced to the beat.

How It’s Innovative

“Autotune for Drummers” is innovative because it redefines live drumming and electronic performance by seamlessly blending human expression with precise digital timing correction. Unlike traditional MIDI quantization, which cannot correct drum hits in real-time, this device predicts the drummer’s intended timing before the hit occurs, allowing for perfect sync even if the drummer is slightly early or late. Its use of sensors and inertial measurement units (IMUs) to interpret movement and intention, without relying on actual drum hits, enables a new level of freedom, expression, and spontaneity on stage. Additionally, it bridges the gap between live human performance and digital precision, transforming how drum performances engage with electronic music, making it both a technological breakthrough and an artistic innovation.

Most Inspiring Use Cases

The most inspiring use of “Autotune for Drummers” is how it empowers performers to express themselves freely and creatively without being constrained by strict timing. It allows drummers to improvise, experiment, and inject emotion into their performance, knowing that their intentions will be perfectly synced to the beat, opening up new possibilities for live electronic music, artistic collaboration, and dynamic stage presence. This fusion of human spontaneity with digital precision transforms live performances into more vibrant, expressive experiences for both artists and audiences.

Expansion Plans

The next step for this drum stick would be to make it wireless thus enabling more freedom for the drummer as well as making the drum stick more durable.

Commercialization

At the moment, commercial manufacturing is discussed with several companies that specialize in wireless electronic instruments.
