LA Laptop Orchestra
Product Description
LA Laptop Orchestra is a public music ritual: for two hours a room full of people, most of whom have never performed, make one piece of music together, and none of them is in charge of it. There is no stage and no audience. Everyone plays at once, seated in the round, close enough to hear the person beside them breathe.
Underneath the room is a single shared harmony that no one plays alone. One person moves the whole ensemble through a network of connected scales, and everyone’s instrument quietly retunes to fit, so the only notes anyone is ever offered are the ones that belong right now. Nobody has to know the key, and nobody can play a wrong note. The worry that usually keeps people from playing together, whether they know the changes and whether they can keep up, is simply gone, and what is left in its place is listening.
The room is deliberately mixed: sight readers following staff notation, live coders shaping patterns in Strudel, players sending MIDI to their own synths, singers, and first-timers tilting a tablet to find a pitch. They read from different views of the same harmony, piano and fretboard and staff and tablature, and they all turn the same corner at the same moment. The piece is the room listening to one another, and the technology that makes it possible is doing everything it can to disappear.
How It’s Innovative
The hard problem in a room like this is not sound. It is getting a crowd of people, most of them untrained, to care about the same invisible thing at the same time, and to change together without anyone calling out a chord. LALORK solves it by making the infrastructure vanish, so that two MIDI ideas do their work without ever asking to be noticed.
The first is the shared harmony. Instead of a click track and a chart, the whole room depends on one live harmonic state the way a campfire depends on the fire: everyone is oriented around it, and nobody is thinking about it. One person steers the scale, chord, and tempo, and every instrument in the room retunes itself to fit, offering only the notes that belong right now. A note that fit a moment ago and no longer does is quietly withdrawn before anyone can play it. Harmony stops being something each player has to track and becomes something the room simply shares.
The second is the one I am proudest of, and it came out of watching the first version fail. When the harmony changed, every screen swapped instantly to the new notes, and sight-reading fell apart: a reader needs about a second of preview to play the next thing cleanly, and an instant swap overwrites exactly that preview, so the room lurched a beat behind every change. Two pianists said it plainly in the room: “we’re holding a chord and when we move on, it immediately plays the next thing, just, immediately, flash.”
So the score learned to warn you before it changes. Incoming notes pulse in before they are yours to play, outgoing notes fade as they leave, and each device runs its own lookahead, two seconds of warning for a nervous first-timer and three hundred milliseconds for an expert, with the outgoing MIDI delayed locally to match what each person’s eyes were just told. Nobody watching this thinks about buffers or lookahead. They find instead that they can stop bracing against the screen and start listening to the person across the circle, and still land the change on the beat, together.
Most Inspiring Use Cases
Fifty people who have never played together, in a room with no stage, making one piece of music that no one of them is steering and none of them could have played alone, and realizing partway through that they are listening harder than they are playing.
A crowd wandering into an Apple Store, lifting the display phones and tablets off the tables, scanning a single QR code, and within a minute turning the whole retail floor into an immersive piece of music that nobody rehearsed and anybody can step into and out of.
The whole room turning one corner together: the person steering lifts the harmony through a modulation, every view of the score warns its reader a breath before it arrives, and a hundred people who met an hour ago land on the same beat, in tune, at once.
Expansion Plans
LALORK begins as a recurring public gathering in Los Angeles, then expands through an open toolkit that allows artists, educators, festivals, museums, and communities to host their own ensembles. The long-term vision is a network of locally run orchestras connected by a shared harmonic language, ranging from classrooms and public libraries to concert halls, parks, galleries, and unexpected public spaces. Every performance explores the same question: how do you help a room of strangers become an ensemble?
Even longer term: extend the same shared harmonic infrastructure into a persistent online world where people explore, compose, rehearse, and perform together. LALORK becomes the physical counterpart to an MMO for music making—a multiplayer creative world where songs leave the experience as MIDI, DAW sessions, stems, and performances that continue outside it. From there, the work expands into VR rehearsal spaces and AR performances, making harmony something people inhabit together rather than simply listen to.
Commercialization
LALORK is free to attend. The long-term model is partnerships with festivals, museums, universities, schools, libraries, and cultural institutions that commission or host performances. The software that makes the work possible remains open to participants, while commercial products such as the Dashboard Plugin support ongoing development of the underlying technology.
