The Automatar is an intelligent AI-powered bass guitar born to bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds. While the instrument functions on some level similarly to any fretted string instrument like a guitar or bass, it innovatively and unprecedentedly is built around a NVIDIA GPU physically embedded within it that imbues the instrument itself with a form of intelligence, enabling it to understand how it is being played and vibrate its own strings in response via an onboard AI model.


How It’s Innovative

AI systems for music are overwhelmingly digital – they exist on screens, and are often controlled with text prompting that makes them fundamentally distinct from the ways that humans have been making music for thousands of years, which are with physical and acoustic instruments. Not only that, generative AI music in its current form is usually soulless, hyper-commercial, and threatens the livelihoods and the craft of human musicians.

The Automatar is built to change that – it uses AI in all the ways that current AI systems do not – it keeps the human in control, it is fundamentally physical and acoustic, and is committed to craft over easy gratification and instantaneous output.

It is the first instrument known to the creator that uses an NVIDIA GPU to run AI models literally on-instrument – no WiFi, no API, no surveillance by mysterious companies in the cloud. This is fundamentally a tool – it will not change overnight or suddenly disappear like so many AI products.

It’s trained with small datasets that enable it to harmonize by playing itself electromagnetically, amplified, but fundamentally acoustic. It doesn’t try and copy human behavior – in fact, its use of electromagnetism ensures it plays in a way that no human can.

The Automatar uses AI to create performances that were impossible before.

Crafted painstakingly entirely from scratch, the Automatar is an intelligent machine built to challenge the ideology of automation through artificial intelligence.

This is an AI instrument, but it was made by humans, for humans with the aim of preserving the tradition and craft of performing and building musical instruments.

Expansion Plans

We are exploring more refined and expressive AI systems that can control more physical aspects of the instrument’s sound, including giving the ability for the instrument to retune itself on the fly, other types of actuators including rosin-wheels, solenoids for plucking, and mechanical “fingers” that can fret the instrument while still keeping the human in control.

Commercialization

The Automatar is currently patent-pending, and we are currently exploring various commercialization options, including small series of run-offs of similar hand-built instruments, modular AI GPU systems that can be mounted onto existing musical instruments, and batches of electromagnetic AI monochords that can interface with standard audio hardware.
