Midihex

Elevator Pitch

Midihex

The Midihex is an isomorphic MIDI controller with a hexagonal keyboard layout inspired by the rare Axis-49.

Product Description

Midihex

Hexagonal keyboard controllers open up new possibilities for playing in diatonic or microtonal scales, but there are very few available, and the only models with traditional moving keys like the Lumatone or the Microzone cost thousands of dollars. The Midihex is intended to make an affordable design with open-source software more widely available to performers and experimenters. It’s essentially a reboot of the rare/discontinued C-Thru Axis-49 with Hall-effect keys for continuous sensing and expanded possibilities for configuration and musical expression.

How It’s Innovative

The Midihex is the first isomorphic MIDI controller with Hall-effect keys in a compact format and with software that will be made open-source. It opens up the possibility of an affordable MPE controller for use with microtonal scales as well as isomorphic patterns such as the Harmonic Table or Wicki-Hayden.

Most Inspiring Use Cases

This is a new prototype which has only just been completed, but is already attracting interest in the microtonal music community.

Expansion Plans

Once the basic version has been established there are plans for further models with expanded keys and controls, and built-in sounds.

Commercialization

It is intended to sell kits and fully-built units online via the Gullsonix website and stores such as Thonk.
