A few of the earliest MIDI 2.0 devices implemented MIDI Capability Inquiry (MIDI-CI) specification version 1.1. Some features defined in this v1.1 have been deprecated or changed. The later MIDI-CI v1.2 establishes rules for backward and forward compatibility between versions of MIDI-CI. Those rules were not defined in v1.1. Those devices which implement v1.2 or higher may need to also understand MIDI-CI v1.1 for legacy compatibility. So this version 1.1 file is provided for developers to consider backward compatibility.

This was the first published version of the Universal MIDI Packet (UMP) Format and MIDI 2.0 Protocol specification. It is strongly recommended that all devices implement the later revision, version 1.1, or higher. Some features defined in this v1.1 have been deprecated or changed.
