Elevator Pitch

Semi Automated Electric Guitar

A semi- automated mechanised guitar designed to be played simultaniously by an improvising musicians and a computer.

Product Description

Semi Automated Electric Guitar

An improvised human/machine duet with a Semi- Automated electric guitar that I designed and built myself (hardware and software) This guitar has been designed to respond to my improvised playing in real time. Creating a live improvised conversation between the player and the mechanised instrument. Mechanised functions can also be pre programed to playback sequences via midi. I created this instrument to unify the two main streams of my practice of mechanized acoustic instrument designer and improvising guitarist. It completely recontextualizes a very familiar instrument, breaking habits and opening up new territories. It is intended to both be a fight for control over the instrument with the digital mechanisations and a technological extension of the musicians body. The Guitar is plugged directly into the amplifier with no effects. Keeping it as close to an amplified acoustic instrument as possible with a direct sound and a naked sensitivity.

How It's Innovative

It completely recontextualizes a very familiar instrument, breaking habits and opening up new territories. Intended to both be a fight for control over the instrument with the digital mechanisations and a technological extension of the musicians body. The Guitar is plugged directly into the amplifier remaining as close to an amplified acoustic instrument as possible for a direct sound and a naked sensitivity.

Expansion Plans

This video is of version 2.0 of the instruemnt - it has since been modified with better real time response , cleaner feedback loops and distancing perminant magnets from the strings (as not to interrupt natural string vibration - sapping sustain and tone) I have also recently built an effect pedal (modified harmonic perculator > valve preamp/boost/dist) that's gain stages can be controlled via envelopes triggered from the guitars MIDI output)
